Start in a minute.

OrbitDrop uses a configurable hold-key gesture that works the same way on macOS and Windows.

Getting started

  1. Download the version for your operating system.
  2. Install or open OrbitDrop using the platform steps below.
  3. Select one or more supported files in Finder or File Explorer.
  4. Hold Space for a moment until the wheel appears.
  5. Keep holding, move the pointer onto an action, then release the key to run it.
  6. Find the new output beside the original file.

To choose another trigger, open the OrbitDrop menu-bar or system-tray menu and select Trigger key. Space, F6–F12, and A–Z are available. Press Escape to cancel an open wheel.

Install on macOS

  1. Open the downloaded ZIP file.
  2. Move OrbitDrop.app to your Applications folder.
  3. While releases remain unsigned, Control-click the app, choose Open, then confirm Open.

macOS 13 Ventura or later is required. The universal build supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Install on Windows

  1. Open the downloaded OrbitDrop Windows executable.
  2. If SmartScreen appears, verify the checksum first. Then choose More info and Run anyway only if it matches.
  3. OrbitDrop starts in the desktop notification area and is ready for selected files.

64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 is required. The executable includes its own runtime.

Supported actions

PDF accepts images and common documents such as DOCX, RTF, TXT, and HTML. PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, Resize, Rotate, Flip, and Gray are available for supported images. ZIP and Copy work with files and folders.

Shrink uses adaptive image compression and reduces dimensions when necessary to produce a meaningfully smaller share-ready JPEG. For documents and folders, Shrink creates a maximum-compression ZIP; formats that are already compressed may show a smaller reduction.

On Windows, Microsoft Word is used for the highest-fidelity DOCX-to-PDF result when it is installed. Without Word, OrbitDrop creates a readable text-based PDF fallback.

Output names

OrbitDrop never intentionally replaces the source. If an output name already exists, it adds a number, such as photo 2.jpg. Image edits add a descriptive suffix such as rotated, resized, or grayscale.

What changed recently

The old right-click interaction has been replaced by the configurable hold-key workflow. Recent releases also added adaptive compression, smoother processing and result feedback, the official OrbitDrop icon on both operating systems, and secure in-place updates.

For version-by-version details, open the release history.

Updates

OrbitDrop checks the official GitHub release page shortly after launch and every six hours while running. When a newer version exists, choose Install Update. OrbitDrop downloads it into temporary private storage, verifies its published SHA-256 checksum and version, closes, replaces the current app, and reopens automatically. It removes the temporary files afterward, so no second ZIP, app, or executable is left in Downloads.

A recovery copy is kept only during installation. If replacement fails, OrbitDrop restores and reopens the previous working version. An administrator confirmation may appear when the app is installed in a protected system folder.

One-time transition: versions older than 0.6.0 still contain the previous download button. Install 0.6.0 once from this website; updates after that install in place.

You can check manually from the menu-bar or notification-area menu. The check sends no files, filenames, analytics identifier, or account information, and all file tools continue working offline.

Troubleshooting

The wheel does not appear

Confirm OrbitDrop is running, select the item before holding the configured key, and keep the key down until the wheel appears. On macOS, confirm Accessibility access is enabled; restart the app after changing that permission.

The wrong shortcut is active

Open the OrbitDrop menu-bar or system-tray menu. The current trigger is shown there, and selecting a new key saves it locally.

A format action is unavailable

The wheel enables only actions that apply to the selected item. Select a supported image for image conversion and editing tools.

The download warning looks unfamiliar

Stop and verify the file against the published checksum. Never install a copy obtained from an unofficial mirror.
